Question: Are we holding a primary to nominate people to run for President, or are we actually involved in a WWE Event? Last’s night debate looked more like “professional wrestlers” from WWE shouting at each other than a debate of any substance.
John Kasich is as wacko as the rest of the Republicans left in the field. Yet, he is the only person on that stage that actually acted like a grown-up. That is the most frightening part of this whole process.
The political process is always somewhat dirty. It seems most candidates think that they cannot get elected unless they throw insults, accusations, and names at each other. These tactics are mostly used when the candidates have no polices to offer the American people. In those instances, name calling deflects the absence of policy.
One of the most telling times, for me, was when Hugh Hewitt asked the question: “would you guaranty the American People that your choice for the Supreme Court would fight for religious liberties?”
This question was asked with a straight face. All of the candidates tried to outdo the others in their zeal for “religious liberties”. But, all of these candidates seem to think that “religious liberties” does not include Muslims since they want Muslims barred from entering the country. They all want Muslim Mosques “watched” for “terrorist activities”.
I heard Marco Rubio scream over and over again, “what’s your plan”. But, he never mentions what his “plan” is either. That was over healthcare coverage. As a matter of fact, the Republicans don’t have a plan. Except that they have a plan to come up with a plan to replace the Affordable Care Act. Republican leadership announced that yesterday before the debate.
Yesterday another mass shooting, the 43rd of the year, took place in that conservative utopia Kansas. Nothing was mentioned about that, even when asked how to protect American citizens from terrorism. But then again, a Muslim wasn’t the shooter, again!
I have been following politics for over 50 years. I have never seen a group of dysfunctional people actually leading any party for the nomination like this year. We have three main contestants for the Republican nomination and all three are basing their campaigns on hate against any group of people that are non-white and non-Christian.
The three include a business man who made his fortune on the backs of others. When his ventures went south, he filed bankruptcy so he didn’t have to pay contractors or workers what they were owed putting several small businesses out of business. We have an absentee Senator who thinks the Senate doesn’t move fast enough for him, so why bother even showing up. And, we have a useless Senator whose only claim to fame was he helped shut down the government. He has not passed a single meaningful piece of legislation.
Yet, we are supposed to trust one of these three with running our country? We are supposed to vote for someone who hasn’t done a single thing for the good of the country?
Many Republicans keep asking why Trump continues to lead the primaries. The simple answer is, whether or not you like him and his business practices, he actually accomplished something. The other two front-runners haven’t accomplished a single thing. Trump has something to point to as accomplishments. Cruz and Rubio have nothing to point to as accomplishments.
The simple facts are that our economy is improving, even though these candidates want you to believe we are in the second great depression. Our military is the best trained, best equipped, and most powerful military in the world, although these “candidates” want you to believe we are a third world country in military power.
There is still a lot to do for the economy. Wealth redistribution to the rich needs to end. Worker’s rights need to be reestablished with strong unions. The poor needs help to get out of poverty. And, the working class needs to be treated with the respect they deserve and paid livable wages for their labors.
These are all things that none of the Republicans on that stage support. We need equal pay for equal work for women. They don’t support that either. No, they support the Bill of Rights, as long as they get to define who is actually protected by the Bill of Rights. They support “religious liberties” as long as they get to define what those “religious liberties” are.
There were five people on the stage last night. One is a doctor who is clearly out of his element running for President. Ben Carson should drop out simply because he isn’t qualified for the position. Every time he opens his mouth he makes a complete fool of himself. Sorry Dr. Carson, go back to medicine. At least there you did some good.
One is a Governor who claims that his state is the best in the country. He continuously touts his “achievements” making Ohio so great. But the numbers don’t quite match his rhetoric. Yet, despite being a right-wing wacko, he at least is able to make himself sound like an adult.
One is a U.S. Senator who is the most absent Senator in the chamber. He was part of the “gang of eight” who actually wrote a good immigration bill. But, when his right-wing wackos started wailing about those damned “illegals” he walked away from it. Other than that, he has done nothing while in office.
One is a U.S. Senator who has done nothing in office except say “no” even to his own party. The only major accomplishment on his record is that he got the House crazies to shut down the government over the Affordable Care Act. Problem is that he wears that “accomplishment” like a badge of honor. His philosophy is very simple: “damn the country. Only I count.”
One is a businessman who will stop at nothing to make more money. He claims that he “will bring back manufacturing” to America. Yet, his own clothing line is made in Mexico. Maybe if he brought that back to America first, we could believe him. He has run what he calls and anti-establishment campaign. What he has really run is a “scorched earth policy” campaign against everything not white enough. Why else would the KKK openly support his campaign?
As I watched last night’s debate, I kept hearing past voices. I kept hearing politicians from the past who were very interested in gaining power. None of those voices were from FDR, JFK, Ronald Reagan, or Barak Obama. No, they were more like the voices from 1920s European politicians.
In those days the evil predators against the “superior” race were Jews, Russians, Slavs and Blacks. Today, the evil predators against the “superior” race are Blacks, Latinos, Muslims, and Gays. Same rhetoric, different targets.
If we don’t remember history, we are doomed to repeat it. Are we looking at repeating those evil times? I hope not, but those are the voices I heard last night. I hope it was just a bad dream.
